It’s been a long winter season, and there’s no doubt your yard could use some love! As your trusted engineering firm in Salt Lake City, we also have a team of in-house landscape architects in Salt Lake City, UT who can help.

Seasonal landscape care is essential to preserve your yard and help it to flourish. Here are a few of our pro tips for getting your landscape in tip-top shape every spring season.

Fertilize your lawn.

Spring fertilizing can help your lawn thicken, and can also prevent weed growth and crabgrass. Testing your soil first (or at least every couple of years) can help you find the right fertilizer to meet your needs. A landscape or lawn care professional can test the pH balance of your soil for you, and make the process simple.

Prune and deadhead trees and shrubs.

Prune back any dead or broken limbs, and give your shrubs and trees a good shape every spring and continue as needed. You may also apply a slow-release fertilizer prior to mulching.

Tidy up your flowerbeds.

Remove any debris or leaves, and clean up the edges of your flower beds. Also, level out the soil if needed.

Remove and control weeds.

Weed your flower beds and spray for weeds as well. You may also need to apply weed spray to any cracks in your cement where weeds grow through. Spraying weed control is also beneficial to prevent crabgrass or other growth on your lawn.

Inspect and test your irrigation system.

Try turning on your sprinklers, drip lines, and any other irrigation elements. Be sure they’re working properly and make any repairs as needed. This is an essential part of making sure your yard receives proper watering and also helps prevent flooding around and in your home.

Add fresh mulch.

Add about a one-inch thick layer of mulch to your flower beds and around trees. Not only does mulch make your yard look clean and fresh, it also helps the soil to better retain moisture and keeps the roots of your plants cool during hot summer months. As the season cools, mulch also helps insulate and protect your plants, plus adds nutrients to the soil as it decomposes.
